Moonlight Despatch by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The role of the frigate in Nelson's navy was one of the most varied of all the ships of the line, but their great speed made them ideal as communications vessels, carrying vital despatches between ships, squadrons and the Admiralty. |
HMS Ark Royal by Ivan Berryman. HMS Ark Royal after a recent refit, rejoins the fleet in 2001. |
HMS Cossack on convoy duty by Ivan Berryman. Built by Vickers Armstrong and launched on 8th June 1937, at the outbreak of War the Cossack served in Home waters and also in the Mediterranean. She was torpedoed and sunk by U.563 in the North Atlantic on the 23rd of October 1941. |
HMS Ark Royal (1970s Carrier) by Ivan Berryman. HMS Ark Royal was the fourth ship in the Royal Navy to bear this memorable name. By far the most impressive, this mighty ship was built to include the angled flight deck, a revolutionary development at the time, with steam catapult. The end of fixed wing aircraft saw Ark Royal quickly become obsolete, being paid off in 1978. |
HMS Thrasher by Ivan Berryman. A T-Class submarine of the Royal Navy launched in 1940 and commissioned in May 1941, HMS Thrasher famously survived an attack by aircraft in 1942, her crew gaining two Victoria Crosses in the process. Immediately after attacking a supply vessel on 16th February, HMS Thrasher was bombed from the air but escaped unscathed. After resurfacing, two unexploded bombs were discovered within the casing of the submarine. The first was easily removed but the second took a contorted effort in confined spaces - an hour-long combined effort by Lt Roberts and PO Gould literally manhandled the lethal ordnance safely over the side. For actions that likely save the submarine, they were both awarded the Victoria Cross. |

HMS Thunderbolt by Ivan Berryman. HMS Thunderbolt by Ivan Berryman. The submarine HMS Thunderbolt moves away from the depot ship Montcalm. Another submarine, HMS Swordfish is alongside for resupply. |

HMS Lion at the Battle of Jutland by Ivan Berryman. HMS Lion with her sister ship HMS Princess Royal are shown firing on the German High Seas Fleet which can be seen in the distance during the Battle of Jutland. |
HMS Kelly passes HMS Royal Sovereign by Ivan Berryman. The destroyer HMS Kelly passes close to the battleship HMS Royal Sovereign as she escorts a convoy in the Mediterranean near Malta. |
Viceless Lady by Ivan Berryman. (GS) A Fairey Swordfish launches from the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Eagle in 1939. HMS Eagle would later fall victim to German U-boat U-73 on 11th August 1942. |
HMS Barham with HMS Eagle in Valetta Harbour in Malta during the 1930s by Ivan Berryman. The Battle ship HMS Barham in company with the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle between the two World Wars. Both fell victim to German U-Boats during World War Two. |
HMS Vanguard by Ivan Berryman. Britain's last great battleship HMS Vanguard in company with the aircraft carrier HMS Indefatigable. |
HMS Furious with HMS Revenge by Ivan Berryman. Grand Harbour, Malta, April 1932. The R-Class battleship HMS Revenge slips majestically past the carrier HMS Furious as she lies at anchor as three of her Fairey IIIFs fly overhead on a routine training sortie. |
Into the Storm by Ivan Berryman. Typical of the many hundreds of craft that took part in the 6th June 1944 landings at Normandy at the opening of Operation Overlord, these unarmed Royal Navy Landing Craft (LCAs) bravely transported many thousands of British and Canadian infantry to the beaches under the most intense fire. |
HMS Medway by Ivan Berryman HMS Medway was the first Royal navy submarine Depot ship that was designed for the purpose from the outset. She is shown here with a quintet of T-class submarines on her starboard side, whilst an elderly L-Class begins to move away having completed replenishment. HMS Medway was sunk on 30th June 1940 having been torpedoed by U-372 off Alexandria. |
HMS Nelson by Ivan Berryman Over 150 years of the Royal Navy are encapsulated in this view of the mighty HMS Nelson, moored at Portsmouth in 1945. Beyond the 16in guns of A turret, the masts of Admiral Nelsons flagship at Trafalgar, HMS Victory rise into the skyline whilst in the foreground MTB 507 cruises past on its way to the Solent. |
Trafalgar by Ivan Berryman. (PC) By 2.00pm on 21st October 1805, the Battle of Trafalgar was all but won, the combined French and Spanish fleets had suffered terrible losses, but not without great cost to the British. Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson lay dying in the cockpit of his flagship, Victory, having been struck down by a single musket round fired from the fighting top of the French Redoutable's mizzen mast as Nelson walked on deck with Captain Hardy. In this scene, the battered remains of Victory can be seen beneath the figurehead of the Spanish 74 Principe de Asturias which dominates the foreground. Beside her, the hulk of the Redoutable sags in the water as Temeraire breaks free. In the centre, the British 74 Leviathan is engaging the French 80-gun Neptune, whilst the San Augustin can be seen firing at the extreme right of the picture. |
HMS Malaya at Capetown, South Africa. by Ivan Berryman. The Queen Elizabeth class battleship HMS Malaya is pictured at Capetown in April 1942 en route to Durban from Gibraltar. A veteran of the First World War, Malaya took part in the Battle of Jutland, receiving eight hits, and going on to serve throughout World War Two, surviving a torpedo off Cape Verde in 1941. She is seen here about to recover her Fairey Swordfish floatplane beneath the dramatic outline of Table Mountain. |
HMS Hermes by Ivan Berryman. Spearheading the Falklands Task Force as it heads south in 1982, the carrier HMS Hermes is shown in company with two Type 21 frigates, HMS Arrow on the left and HMS Ardent in the near foreground. In the far distance, HMS Glamorgan glints in the sun as Type 42 HMS Sheffield cuts across behind Hermes. |
