The Battle of Copenhagen, 2nd April 1801 by Ivan Berryman. The key to Nelsons victories always lay in his meticulous planning and the Battle of Copenghagen was no exception as he used his fleet to first destroy the Danish floating defences so that his bomb vessels could be brought up to bombard the city itself. The Danes eventually capitulated, but they had fought hard and over 2,000 men had died on both sides before the end of the battle. In this view, HMS Elephant, carrying the flag of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, dominates the scene as the battle gathers intensity. The Battle of Copenhagen – HMS Glattons Bravest Day by Ivan Berryman. The battle of Copenhagen was long and hard-fought and Admiral Parker ordered Admiral Nelson to withdraw, an order that Nelson ignored. At one point a Danish frigate moved swiftly to attack Nelsons flagship HMS Elephant, but Captain Bligh of HMS Glatton sailed his ship directly into the broadside to protect the flagship. The Glatton, already displaying some damage, somehow survived the terrible barrage inflicted to its hull by the low-firing Danish vessel. The Elephant was saved and the battle eventually won with the unconditional capitulation of Denmark. It was surely Captain Blighs finest hour and an act of selfless bravery. In the background, HMS Bellona is aground on a sand bank, one of three British ships that failed to navigate the narrow channel. |
The Battle of Cape St Vincent - Nelsons Patent Bridge by Ivan Berryman. As the early morning fog and mist began to clear on 14th February 1797, the British squadron commanded by Admiral Jervis spotted two columns of Spanish ships and immediately set off in pursuit. Horatio Nelson was stationed at the very rear of the British squadron in HMS Captain and, from this vantage point Nelson suspected that the Spanish would form into a single fighting unit and he feared that they would attempt to encircle the British ships and attack them in the round. Against orders to the contrary, Nelson broke away and sailed directly at the Spanish line to intercept them. A fierce artillery battle ensued with the San Josef losing her mizzen mast and HMS Captain having her fore top shot away. Damage to the San Nicolas was such that she became uncontrollable and crashed heavily into the San Josef, at which point Nelson drove his ship into the pair of them, personally leading the boarding party to take both ships as prizes. This daring manoeuvre became known as Nelsons Patent Bridge for Boarding First Rates and alerted the Admiralty to young Nelsons bravado and courage. |
