Napoleon Leading His Army by Jan Van Chelminski. (PC)

Napoleon's Grande Armee was comprised of around 600,000 troops at its peak, it was known for its organization, discipline and innovative tactics, including rapid manoeuvres and sophisticated coordinated attacks. Despite its initial successes, the Grande Armee suffered severe losses during the ill-fated Russian campaign of 1812 which led to its eventual decline and the weakening of Napoleon's military power in Europe.

Assault on the Church Yard, The Kolberger Regiment at Grossbeeren By Carl Rochling

The Battle of Grossbeeren, fought on August 23rd 1813, was a major engagement during the War of the Sixth Coalition against Napoleon. It took place near the village of Grossbeeren, south of Berlin, between the Prussian forces, led by General Karl von Gneisenau, and the French army under General Pierre Augereau. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Prussians, who successfully repelled the French advance towards Berlin. This victory boosted the morale of the Coalition forces and contributed to the broader campaign against Napoleons rule in Germany.

Battle of Friedland by Horace Vernet.

As the evening draws to a close Napoleon is seen riding amongst his men after their victory at the Battle of Friedland. Due to the French pressure the Russian Commander General Levin Bennigsen moved his army back to his main camp at Konigsberg in June 1807, while his army of 60,000 men crossed the River Alle at Friedland. It was faced by a French force of 26,000 under the command of Marshal Jean Lannes. The Russian Commander attacked early on the 14th of June. The much smaller force fought of the Russian attacks for nine hours, giving time for the main French force of 80,000 to arrive. Marshall Neys Force came up from the south and attacked the Russian left flank which gave way all the way along the river until just outside Friedland where it was halted. A second corps under the command of General Laude Victor came to the support of Neys left flank. Victor also brought up 30 Artillery pieces which blasted the Russians at very short range. The Russians that were massed in the tiny village and unable to cross the River received huge numbers of casualties due to the artillery fire. General Bennigsens army was decimated with most of his troops killed, wounded or forced to cross the river. The actual looses were 11,000 dead, 7,000 wounded and many thousands of troops drowned trying to cross the river. This compared to the French losses of 1372 killed 9,108 wounded. The French army pursued the Russians with Marshal Soult occupying Konigsberg on June 16th. A few days later Czar Alexander I arranged a truce and on the 25th of June on a barge like raft on the River Niemen along with the Prussian King Frederick Willaim III drew up the Treaty of Tilset. Prussia ceded to France all the territories West of the Elbe, becoming the Kingdom of Westphalia and from the area of Poland both Russia and Prussia recognised the new state, The Duchy of Warsaw.

The Death of Sir Thomas Picton at Waterloo by William Holmes Sullivan (PC)

"Many anecdotes of individual prowess have been preserved; but of, all the brave men who were in the British Army on that eventful day, none deserve more honour for courage and indomitable resolution than Sir Thomas Picton, who, as has been mentioned, fell in repulsing the great attack of the French upon the British left centre. It was not until the dead body was examined after the battle that the full heroism of Picton was discerned. He had been wounded on the 16th at Quatre Bras by a musket ball, which had broken two of his ribs; and caused also severe internal injuries; but he had concealed the circumstance, evidently in expectation that another and greater battle would be fought in a short time, and desirous to avoid being solicited to absent himself from the field. His body was blackened and swollen by the wound, which must have caused severe and incessant pain; and it was marvellous how his spirit had borne him up and enabled him to take part in the fatigues and duties of the field. The bullet which on the 18th killed the renowned leader of "the fighting division" of the Peninsula, entered the head near the left temple and passed through the brain, so that Pictons death must have been instantaneous." - From 'Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World' by Sir Edward Creasy
