The Battle of Hagelberg on August 27th, 1813 By Carl Rochling (PC)

The Battle of Hagelberg was a surprise attack on a French encampment of around 9000 soldiers by 14 Prussian Landwehr Battalion and 12 cavalry squadrons. There had been a torrential downpour of rain for the entire day of the attack so the powder for the soldiers rifles had gotten damp, this meant that a lot of the fighting was done with bayonets and rifle butts. The skirmish came to a decisive end when Russian Cossacks joined the action, forcing a French retreat, although only a third of the French managed to escape unharmed.

The French Retreat at Katzbach, August 26th 1813 By Richard Knotel (PC)

Seen here, the French flee over the bridge of Nieder-Crayn during the heavy thunderstorm that took place at The Battle of the Katzbach River. Hundreds of men would drown in the flooding rivers of the Katzbach and the Raging Neisse on their retreat from the brutal battle, fought largely in melee combat as a result of damp musket powder.

Les Deux Amis (Two Friends) by Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier (PC)

Part of the classic collection.

Detail from Sabres on the Esla by Mark Churms (PC)

Sir John Moores epic retreat to Corunna was punctuated by desperate and often heroic rear-guard actions - none more dramatic than the cavalry clash at Benevente on the 29th December 1808. Having crossed the river Esla, cold and swollen by recent rainfall, a British picquet, comprised of elements of the Kings German Legion Hussars and the 7th, 10th and 18th Hussars, covers the river and its tactically demolished Castro Gonzalos bridge from a position near the town of Benevente. Napoleon himself leads the pursuit. The Emperors elite Guard Light Cavalry, commanded by General Lefebvre-Desnouettes, is ordered at daylight to ford the river and launch a surprise attack on what appears to be the numerically inferior British units. As five-hundred and fifty French cavalry emerge in orderly fashion from the river, intent upon quickly dispatching the opposition, they are startled to find the British piquet, reinforced by a host of British cavalry, streaming from within the confines of Benevente, some on their left flank. Under the command of Lord Paget, the British become the pursuers of the surprised French, who turn and retreat with the frigid waters of the Esla blocking their escape. Unlike their crossing in echelon just minutes before, the French now in disorder plunge into the river, where many drown. Others are captured including General Lefebvre-Desnouettes who is made prisoner by Grisdale of the 10th Hussars following a dramatic pursuit. General Lefebvre-Desnouettes will eventually escape from captivity in England, to encounter Lord Paget once again on the field of Waterloo.

Prince Louis of Prussia and Sergeant Guindey by Felician Myrbach (PC)

Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia taking a fatal sabre wound from Jean-Baptiste Guindey, quartermaster of the French 10th Hussars during the battle of Saalfield on the 10th of October 1806. Guindey would receive the cross of honour for this action however would go on to die in the Battle of Hanau on the 20th of October 1813, cut down by Bavarian horsemen. Taken from the original book plates published 1893.

The Death of Sir Thomas Picton at Waterloo by William Holmes Sullivan (PC)

"Many anecdotes of individual prowess have been preserved; but of, all the brave men who were in the British Army on that eventful day, none deserve more honour for courage and indomitable resolution than Sir Thomas Picton, who, as has been mentioned, fell in repulsing the great attack of the French upon the British left centre. It was not until the dead body was examined after the battle that the full heroism of Picton was discerned. He had been wounded on the 16th at Quatre Bras by a musket ball, which had broken two of his ribs; and caused also severe internal injuries; but he had concealed the circumstance, evidently in expectation that another and greater battle would be fought in a short time, and desirous to avoid being solicited to absent himself from the field. His body was blackened and swollen by the wound, which must have caused severe and incessant pain; and it was marvellous how his spirit had borne him up and enabled him to take part in the fatigues and duties of the field. The bullet which on the 18th killed the renowned leader of "the fighting division" of the Peninsula, entered the head near the left temple and passed through the brain, so that Pictons death must have been instantaneous." - From 'Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World' by Sir Edward Creasy

The Battle of Quatre Bras by Vereker Monteith Hamilton (PC)

The Battle of Quatre Bras took place on the 16th of June 1815. The battle was a prelude to the Battle of Waterloo that took place on the 18th. Victory at Quatre Bras went to Wellington and his forces, however the battle meant that the allied forces were held up and unable to reinforce the Prussian forces at the Battle of Ligny, causing Napoleons forces to gain a victory; the last in Napoleons military career, however. From the original book plates published in 1909.
