The Worst Scrape - Retreat from Burgos October/November 1812 by Chris Collingwood.

After a major victory at Salamanca (22 July 1812) Wellington occupied Madrid and then advanced to capture Burgos - unfortunately with insufficient siege equipment he was compelled to retire and forced to experience a harrowing retreat, it was, he said The worst scrape. However, when the campaigning season ended, Spain, south of the Tagus, was free of the French.

Karl Freiherr von Ditfurth fighting the Tyroleans by Louis Braun

The Tyrolean Rebellion, occurred between 1809 and 1810 in the Tyrol region, which is now part of modern-day Austria and Italy. It was a nationalist revolt led by local Tyrolean leader Andreas Hofer against the occupying forces of Napoleon's French Empire and their Bavarian allies. The Tyroleans, leveraging their knowledge of the mountainous terrain launched a series of successful guerrilla attacks. Despite initial victories including the notable Battle of Bergisel, the rebellion was ultimately quelled as French and Bavarian forces regained control.

Les Adieux de Fontainebleau by Horace Vernet.

Napoleon is shown taking leave of the Imperial Guard outside the Palace of Fontainbleau. With a dramatic final gesture, I cannot embrace you all but I shall embrace your General, and after General Petit, he kissed the eagle of the 1st Grenadiers whose bearer, Lieut Fortin covers his face. The officers at the right are representative of the Allied armies and are considerably less affected by the scene than the Frenchman.

Wellingtons March From Quatre Bras to Waterloo by Ernest Crofts.

Depicting Wellingtons withdrawal on 17th June 1815, the day before Waterloo, when the Prussian retreat to Wavre had left the British position dangerously exposed. There are a lot of similarities between this painting and Meissoniers Friedland 1807, but from a British perspective.

Emperor Napleon I and his staff on Horseback by Horace Vernet

Napoleon is pictured here on his horse Marengo, an Arabian breed who carried him through many major engagements, including Austerlitz, Jena-Auerstedt, Wagram and finally Waterloo. Marengo would be captured in 1815 at Waterloo by English Baron William Petre and was returned to Britain, eventually passing away in 1831 at the age of 27.

Saving the Colours at Albuera by Allan Stewart (PC)

The Battle of Albuera, fought on May 16, 1811, during the Peninsular War, was a significant confrontation between British, Spanish, and Portuguese forces against the French army led by Marshal Soult. The Allied forces, commanded by General William Beresford, faced a fierce attack and endured heavy casualties but ultimately held their ground, achieving a strategic victory. Despite the high losses, the battle demonstrated the resilience of the Allied troops and helped to maintain their position in southern Spain against the French forces.
