The Charge of the 10th Hussars at Beneventi by William Barnes Wollen

December 29, 1808, during the Corunna Campaign of the Peninsular War. As part of the British rear guard under Sir John Moore, the 10th Hussars charge into the French forces at Benevento in southern Italy, disrupting their positions and helping to cover the British retreat.

Tribute to the 95th Rifles by Chris Collingwood.

In August 1808 the 2nd battalion of the 95th Rifles were part of the expedition commanded by Sir Arthur Wellesley to Portugal and covered the landings at Mondego Bay. On 15th August during a skirmish at Obidos, they had the distinction of firing the first shots of the Peninsular War against the French. The Rifles were trained to think quickly and by themselves in dangerous situations, they were also taught to work and fight together in pairs while firing harassing and well aimed shots at the enemy. The Baker rifle which the 95th used was an accurate weapon for its day, with reported kills being taken up to 270 metres away. During the Peninsular War, Rifleman Thomas Plunkett of the 1st Battalion, 95th Rifles, shot the French General Auguste-Marie-Francois Colbert at a range that may have been even greater. Rifleman Thomas Plunkett then shot a second French officer who rode to the general's aid.

Closing the Gate at Hougoumont by William Holmes Sullivan (PC)

"They then hastily withdrew into the great Court Yard by the gate which faces the Allied position, and which they instantly closed and endeavoured to block up with ladders, posts, barrows or whatever was nearest at hand. The French, however, succeeded in forcing the Gate, but the defenders betook themselves to the nearest cover, whence they poured a fire upon the intruders, and then rushing forward, a struggle ensued which was distinguished by the most intrepid courage on both sides. At length Lieutenant Colonel Macdonnell, Captain Wyndham, Ensigns Gooch and Hervey and Sergeant Graham, of the Coldstream Guards, by dint of great personal strength and exertions, combined with extraordinary bravery and perseverance, succeeded in closing the Gate against their assailants. Those of the latter who had entered the Court Yard fell a sacrifice to their undaunted and conspicuous gallantry." - From'The Waterloo Campaign, 1815' by William Siborne

Battle of Marengo by Jacques Augustin Pajou.

Napoleon was surprised by the enemy on the plain of Bormida. 30,000 Austrians attacked 22,000 French at 9 oclock on the morning of 14th June 1800. The day went badly for Napoleon and by 5 oclock he retreated. Later that day he stopped his retreat and re-advanced, and it was at this point that General Desaix was killed. This victory was nearly a defeat.
