Carbines Ready by Felician Myrbach. Cavalry units during the Napoleonic Wars utilised carbines to great effect. The carbine came in at around 10 inches shorter than the standard infantryman's musket and thus allowed for better manoeuvrability while mounted. Paired with the carbine would be either a light curved sabre or a heavy straight sabre depending on the type of cavalry and battlefield role. Taken from the original book plates published 1893. |

Royal Horse Artillery, c.1832 by Harry Payne The Royal Regiment of Artillery has one of the most distinguished records of any in the British Army. It had small beginnings and in 1716 there were only two small companies. The Horse Artillery not added until 1793, though it was not entirely separated from the Field Artillery until after the Boer War. Its utility was strikingly demonstrated during the long struggle with France. |

After the Charge, Hanau 1813 by Henri Chartier The 2nd Light Cavalry Lancers of the Imperial Guard return from their heroic charge at the Battle of Hanau. Known as the 'Red Lancers', the 2nd was largely composed of Dutchmen, after the annexation of Holland. They were known for their bravery in battle and iconic scarlet campaign dress, modelled after the Polish Lancers uniform. |

Sergeant. Major Marshall's Waterloo, Belgium, 18th June 1815 by David Pentland. Leading the 6th Innskilling Dragoons in the charge of the Union Brigade, Sgt.Maj. Marshall became embroiled in a fight with troopers of the French 5th Cuirassiers. Severely wounded with 19 lance and sabre wounds he lay on the battlefield nights before he was found. Despite his wounds he recovered to live another 10 years. |
