Kampfgruppe Peiper by David Pentland (PC) Oberssturmbannfuhrer Jochim Peiper, commander of the armoured spearhead of 1st SS Panzer Division, in conference with some of the officers of other units under his command. Aside form men and tanks of his own division, these included King tigers of the 501st heavy tank battalion and paratroops of 1st battalion, 9th Fallschrimjager regiment. |
US 4th Division, Utah Beach, D-Day, 6th June 1944 by Jason Askew. (PC) Utah beach was the great American success story of D-day. Compared to the difficulties encountered on Omaha beach, the casualties suffered by the American 4th Division on Utah beach were described as 'light'. Although tactical problems were encountered on the Utah beach landings, i.e. the loss of many of the landing control teams, the strong tide causing problems, German placed mines sinking vessels, and the overall atmosphere of fog / low visibility, the American infantry were able to subdue and overcome the German beach defences and penetrate inland, with much greater speed than the divisions that landed on Omaha. Terrain played a role with regard to the difference in combat experience between the two American beaches. The high bluffs at Omaha gave the German defenders a certain geographical advantage, whereas the low-lying sand dunes at Utah favored the mobility of the American infantry and armor. The low-lying terrain at Utah also favored the Allied air bombardment. Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr, the President's son, landed with the first wave at Utah beach. Roosevelt, together with the 8th Infantry regiment's commanding officer, James Van Fleet, directed the tactical battle on Utah beach, and coordinated the American advance inland. |

Under New Management by David Pentland (PC) Finnish T-26 Tanks en-route to Karhumaki, January, 1942. Developed from the Vickers 6 Ton Tank the Soviet T-26 was one of the most successful tank designs of the 1930s. Many were captured by Finnish forces during the Winter War of 1939-40 and although nearly obsolote were still welcomed by the Finns, and used throughout the continuation war. |

M36 Tank Destroyers of A Company, 703rd TD Battalion whose arrival was a welcome Christmas present for the Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division. They proved invaluable as they were the only US vehicle capable of handling both the Panther or Tiger tanks. |

British Cruiser Mark II (A10) tanks of 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, 7th Armoured Brigade pause during General Wavell's offensive against the Italian held Halfaya Pass and Fort Capuzzo. Led by General 'Straffer' Gott the attack was initially a success, but counter attacks by German reinforcements halted the British offensive after one day, and pushed it back to the Egyptian border. |

Royal Armoured Corps Recce troops of the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division set up a temporary observation post to locate 12th SS Panzer Division positions, prior to Operation Epsom. The 15th Division comprised of 9th Cameronians, 2nd Glasgow Highlanders, 7th Seaforth Highlanders, 8th Royal Scots, 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers, 6th King's Own Scottish Borderers, 10th Highland Light Infantry, 2nd Gordon Highlanders and the 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. |

Both units were part of perhaps the most important formation involved in the British and Canadian landings, the 79th Armoured Division or Funnies. Composed of a variety of armoured vehicles, designed to support the beach assault troops, they included mine flails, bunker busters, carpet layers, and amphibious tanks. |

Following the disaster for the US Army at Kasserine at the hands of Field Marshal Rommel, the Axis forces were eventually stopped by the remnants of the US 2nd and 3rd Battalions, 13th Armoured Regiment 1st Armoured Division at Thala. After the battle Rommel singled out the 2nd battalion for their stubborn and clever defence of Sbeitla. |
Operation Dynamo, Dunkirk, France 24th May - 4th June 1940 by David Pentland. (PC) Trapped within a rapidly decreasing perimeter, the exhausted BEF along with elements of the French 1st Army appeared to be at the mercy of the mighty Luftwaffe. No one though had reckoned on the brilliant leadership of Admiral Ramsay nor the gallant and unstinting efforts of the military and civilians who managed to rescue over 330,000 troops in nine days. |
Strike For Gela, Sicily, 11th June 1943 by David Pentland (PC) Tiger I tanks of 2 Kompanie/ Schwere Panzer Abteilung 504, attached to Panzer Division Herman Goring, launch their attack on the main US 7th Army landing beach at Gela, on the first day of Operation Husky. Despite the fact that the Herman Goring troops were untried in battle it was only the devastating effect of allied naval gunfire that stopped them reaching and probably destroying the beach head. |
