3.30am, 13th February 2010. RAF Chinooks come in to land at Bastion to enplane troops. There were eleven flights of airframes commencing at 3.30 am and lasting three hours until first light. The Regiments involved: The 1st Royal Welsh, 1st Grenadier Guards Battle Group, Scots Guards, US Marine Corps and various ISAF controlled units. ANA and ANP. The scene was witnessed and filmed and photographed for the BBC by the official war artist on Herrick 11.


Operation Mar Karadad - The Retaking of Musa Qal'eh by David Rowlands.

Right Flank, 1st Battalion Scots Guards was an independent armoured infantry company attached to 52 Brigade during Operation HERRICK 7. The company was equipped with Warrior armoured fighting vehicles. The successful retaking of the town of Musa Qal'eh from the Taliban in December 2007 was code-named Operation MAR KARADAD. The scene shows a morning raid to clear the area of Taliban, when Right Flank was working under the Household Cavalry Regiment Battlegroup.

On the 14th June 1982 the 2nd battalion Scots Guards captured one of the most strongly defended Argentine positions of the Falklands campaign, their losses were 9 killed and 43 wounded.

Second Lieutenant Rochfort picks up a bomb, which was about to explode, and hurls it from the trench.

While a party of men was at work in a communication trench between Cambrin and La Bassee at 2 a.m. on the morning of August 3rd 1915, a bomb from a German trench mortar landed on the side of the parapet, close to them. Second Lieutenant George Arthur Boyd Rochfort, of the Special Reserve, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards, was standing a short way off at the time, and shouting to the men, he rushed at the bomb, seized it and hurled it over the parapet, where it instantly exploded. His courage and presence of mind saved the lives of many of the working party, and he was rewarded with the V.C. for most conspicuous bravery.

The action depicts at Djebel Bou Aoukaz, Tunisia, 27th April 1943. Depicting Lyell charging the German 88mm gun position single handed (one other supporting Guardsman had been shot and killed) With pistol in one hand and dirk in the other, Lyell leaped forward firing and slashing, Five men fell at his feet, before he was overpowered and hacked to death. The scene was witnessed by a wounded Guardsman on the ridge.
