George Smith

George Smith enlisted in the Royal Marines in 1917 and joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry to fight on the Western Front with the Royal Naval Division. He was then posted to Greece and saw further service in the Near East. He remained in the Royal Marines after the Great War and served a total of 28 years before he was demobilised in 1945 after seeing action in World War Two. He served on board HMS Colossus, HMS Eagle, HMS Repulse and HMS Ganges. After retirement from the Royal Marines he settled in Devon and lived in Topsham, close to the Royal Marine Training Depot. He was latterly decorated with the Legion d'Honneur by the French Government as one of the survivors of the Great War.
