Battle Over Bembridge by Ivan Berryman. (PC) At the very height of the Battle of Britain in August 1940, there was a great deal of furious fighting above and around the Isle of Wight. Monday 12th was an especially busy day for RAF Fighter Command, not least the Hurricanes of 601 Sqn, one of whom claimed this Messerschmitt Bf.110 in the skies above Bembridge, the two crew Staffel Kapitan Hptmn. Kulbel and his observer Offz. Budig losing their lives as their aircraft plunged into the sea.

Tribute to Pilot Officer Ted Shipman by Ivan Berryman. Flying as Leader of B Flight, 41 Sqn, on 15th August 1940, Pilot Officer Ted Shipman and the rest of his flight found themselves among a mass of Messerschmitt Bf.110s that had been detailed to escort a bomber force of Heinkel He111s on a raid on the North of England. Having made one head-on attack on one of the Bf.110s, Shipman manoeuvred his Spitfire Mk.1 onto the tail of another and fired a long burst into it. This was M8+CH of Oberleutnant Hans-Ulrich Kettling of 1./ZG76 and rear Gunner / Radio Operator O/ Gefr Volk, whose starboard engine burst into flames and disappeared into the dense cloudbase. Shipman claimed this initially as a probable, but it was later confirmed as a victory when the aircraft was found to have crash landed at Streatham Nr Barnard Castle. Spitfire K9805 (EB-L) is depicted breaking off the attack as Kettling's stricken Bf.110 begins to burn. Ted Shipman would go on to serve with the Royal Air Force until December 1959 retiring as a Wing Commander. Ted would also go onto become friends with Hans-Ulrich Kettling, the pilot he shot down.

Summer 1940 by Ivan Berryman. Pilot Officer Allan Wright - later Group Captain, and awarded DFC and AFC - pilots Spitfire QJ-S of No.92 Squadron during the Battle of Britain, with his wingman in close support.

The Chain by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Spitfire Mk.1 over a trio of Chain radar masts on the south coast of England. This Spitfire is from No.603 Sqn based at RAF Hornchurch from 27th August 1940, the height of the Battle of Britain.

Revenge of the Raider by Ivan Berryman. The 79 Sqn Hurricane Mk.I P3877 of P/O E J Morris receiving hits from a Dornier 17 on 31st August 1940. Morris was forced to crash land his aircraft and was slightly wounded following the combat.

Total Commitment by Ivan Berryman. On the afternoon of 5th September 1940, Spitfires of 41 Sqn intercepted a large formation of Heinkel 111 bombers and their escorts over the Thames estuary, en route for London. Flying N3162 as Red 2, Flight Lieutenant Eric Lock attacked the bombers head on as they began to turn north. In a fraught combat, Lock was to destroy two He.111s and a Bf.109 on that single mission, setting him on course to become the highest scoring ace in the RAF during the Battle of Britain with sixteen confirmed victories and one shared. His final total at the end of the war was twenty six kills confirmed and eight probables.

One on the Run by Ivan Berryman. A pair of 79 Sqn Hurricanes attacking a Heinkel 111 on 15th August 1940. The nearest Hurricane is that of F/Lt Owen Tracey, who eventually destroyed the He.111 that was on its way to bomb Newcastle.

501 Sqn Scramble by Ivan Berryman. Byron Duckenfield and his 501 Squadron wingman struggle to get airborne in their Hurricanes as the spectacle of the scrambling squadron draws a group of passing motorists out of their vehicle to witness the thunderous noise of the aircraft.

Tribute to Ken Mackenzie by Ivan Berryman. Wing Commander Ken Mackenzie was a formidable opponent during the Battle of Britain - even without any weaponry as on the occasion depicted here. Then a Pilot Officer flying with No.501 Sqn, on 7th October 1940 he shot up an Me109 and followed it down to the sea, expecting it to ditch. When his foe did not crash-land, he used the starboard wing-tip of his Hurricane, V6799 SD-X, to strike the tailplane of his opponent, sending the German fighter crashing into the water. Thus he claimed one of at least 6 victories during the Battle of Britain and 10 overall in the war. Posted in June 1941 to No.247 Sqn, Ken Mackenzie was himself forced to ditch into the sea after damage from flak over Brittany. He became a prisoner of war until October 1944 and served in the Royal Air Force until 1967, becoming an airline pilot until 1973. He died in 2009.

High Patrol by Ivan Berryman. Hawker Hurricane Mk 1s of No 242 Sqn patrol a glorious September sky as the Battle of Britain reaches its climax in the Summer of 1940. The nearest aircraft is that of Sqn Ldr Douglas Bader, flying V7467 in which he claimed four victories, plus two probables and one destroyed. P/O W L McKnight (LE-A) and P/O D W Crowley-Milling (LE-M) are in close attendance.

Italian Raiders by Ivan Berryman. The Italian Air Force's involvement in the Battle of Britain is one of the less documented facets of the conflict of 1940, but raids by aircraft of the Corpo Aereo Italiano (CAI) on mainland Britain were a reality in the closing stages, usually with little effect and almost always with high losses on the Italian side, due largely to obsolete aircraft and lack of pilot training. Based at Ursel in Belgium, Fiat BR.20 bombers flew over 100 sorties, usually escorted by Fiat CR.42s, as illustrated here, the nearest aircraft being that of 18° Gruppo's Commanding Officer Maggiore Ferruccio Vosilla, wearing the white fuselage band and command pennant on the fuselage side.

Tribute to Flying Officer Count Manfred Beckett Czernin by Ivan Berryman. Serving with distinction throughout the Battle of Britain, Count Manfred Beckett Czernin's score included 13 confirmed, 2 unconfirmed, 3 probables and 5 damaged. He is depicted here on 25th July 1940, claiming the last of three Messerschmitt Bf.110s that he shot down that day, flying Hurricane V7408 (YB-F) whilst with 17 Sqn. Despite being shot down by Adolf Galland in November, he survived the war and passed away in 1962 having been awarded a DFC, an MC and DSO.
