Tribute to Gunther Seeger by Ivan Berryman. Scoring his first victory during the Battle of Britain with 3./JG2, Gunther Seeger served on the Channel Front until the end of 1942 before moving to the Mediterranean. Joining JG53 shortly after, he racked up 56 victories in all, and was awarded the Knight's Cross. Shown here in his Bf.109 F2 of Stab JG2 in France, 1941, Gunther Seeger died in 2013. |
First to Fall by Ivan Berryman. The first Messerschmitt Bf.109 to be brought down on English soil in WW2 was 2964, a machine from 3/LG2. Although injured, the pilot baled out successfully, landing near Sandwich in Kent, the victim of an intense combat with Spitfires of 54 Sqn. |
Gunther Rall by Ivan Berryman. (P) With 275 victories credited, Gunther Rall is the third highest scoring Ace in history He was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. |
Tribute to Generalleutnant Adolf Galland by Ivan Berryman. One of the all time great fighter aces, Adolf Galland is depicted flying Bf 109E-4/N of Stab/JG26 in September 1940. Galland flew 705 combat missions during World War Two and was credited with a final tally of 104 aerial victories. He survived the war and died peacefully in February 1996. |
Tribute to Heinz Lange by Ivan Berryman. Flying with JG21 at the outbreak of World War Two, Heinz Lange claimed his first victory in October 1939. Transferring to JG54, he flew 76 missions throughout the Battle of Britain, then scored 7 victories in the first week of the invasion of Russia. He commanded 1./JG54 from October 1941, then 3./JG51 from 1942 to 1944 before returning to JG54, then led IV./JG51. He is shown here in Bf109 F-2 of 1./JG.54 at Krasnagvardeisk, Russia, 1941. Awarded the Knight's Cross, he scored 70 victories in over 600 missions. He died in 2006. |
Tribute to Alfred Grislawski by Ivan Berryman. Credited with more than 130 victories in World War Two, Alfred Grislawksi scored 24 of these on the Western Front. He is depicted here flying his Me109 with JG53 in what would be his last combat on 26th September 1944. Having shot down a P-38 Lightning earlier in the day, he was shot down in the combat shown by the P-51 Mustang of American Ace Hub Zemke and bailed out. Opening his parachute very low for fear of being shot at, he landed hard and damaged vertebrae, and did not recover before the end of the war. Awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, he died in 2003 aged 83. |

Tribute to Walter Krupinski by Ivan Berryman. Originally flying Me109s with JG52 at the end of the Battle of Britain, Walter Krupinski then transferred to the Eastern Front and had scored more than 50 victories by the end of 1942, earning him the Knight's Cross. He took on a young and struggling Erich Hartmann and tutored him in aerial combat - Hartmann went on to become the leading Ace in history with 352 victories. Commanding 7.JG52 in 1943, Krupinski scored 11 victories in a single day. In the spring of 1944 he went west for the defence of Germany, commanding units in JG5, JG26 and JG11. He was awarded the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross and in March 1945 joined the famous JV44 flying Me262 jets until the end of the war. In more than 1100 missions he was credited with 197 victories. He is seen here flying Bf.109 G-2 Yellow 5 of 6/JG52 over Russia in October 1942. He later flew with the reformed German Air Force after the war, and flew the F-104 Starfighter. He died in 2000. |

Ltn. Hans-Ekkehard Bob of JG21 Becomes an Ace by Ivan Berryman. Major Hans-Ekkehard Bob is shown claiming his 5th victory - a Blenheim - 60km west of Rotterdam on 26th June 1940. Bob went on to serve with JG.54, JG.51, JG.3, EJG2.2 and JV.44, scoring a total of 60 confirmed victories in the course of his Luftwaffe service. The Blenheim claimed as his 5th victory is likely to have been R3776 of No.110 Squadron, which was the only Blenheim recorded to have been lost participating in Operation Soest on that day - while another returned to base damaged and crash landed. The three crew of the Blenheim were all missing in action - P/O Cyril Ray Worboys, Sgt Gerald Patterson Gainsford and Sgt Kenneth Cooper. |

Tribute to Peter Düttmann by Ivan Berryman. Peter Düttmann joined 5.JG52 in the spring of 1943, remaining with the unit until the end of the war. In just 395 missions he scored 152 victories - including 9 in a single day - and was awarded the Knight's Cross. Despite his aircraft being shot down or crash landing on 17 occasions, he was never wounded. He is depicted here in Bf.109 G-4 Black 12 of 5/JG52, Russia, May 1943. Peter Düttmann died in 2001. |
Green Hearts by Ivan Berryman. Situated 40 miles south west of Leningrad, the German occupied airfield at Siverskaya is now home to the famous Grunherz or Green Hearts of Jagdgeschwader 54. The harsh Russian winter of 1941 is starting to take hold as three Messerschmitt Bf109F-4 Friedrichs from III Gruppe take off into early morning sunshine to act as fighter escort to Stuka attacks on the Soviet fleet in Kronstadt Harbour. With its wheel covers removed to prevent snow jamming the undercarriage, lead aircraft Yellow 5 already shows signs of weathering to the partial whitewash hastily applied over summer camouflage. |
Anton Hafner by Ivan Berryman. The top scoring ace of JG.51, Anton Hafner is credited with 204 confirmed victories. A prolific scorer, on 8th August 1944, he shot down no fewer than seven Russian Sturmoviks and, by October of that year, his overall tally had exceeded 200. He died in combat with a Yak 7, his 204th victim, when his aircraft hit a tree. He is shown here in Messerschmitt Bf.109G-6 442013 Black 1. |
Collision Course by Ivan Berryman. On 17th April 1943, Hans-Ekkehard Bob claimed a victory over a B-17 Flying Fortress, by ramming his opponent. He was forced to bale out of his damaged Bf109G and also sustained injuries during the incident. |
