The signature of George Brumwell Jameson MC (deceased)

George Brumwell Jameson MC (deceased)
*Signature Value : £80

George Brumwell Jameson was born on 19th December 1892 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. After leaving school he was apprenticed in Armstrong-Whitworth's shipyards. His military service began with the 1st Northumbrian Brigade, the Elswick Battery, in 1910, transferring to the Northumberland Hussars Imperial Yeomanry, a volunteer force which had seen service in the Boer War. On the outbreak of war with Germany in 1914 his regiment joined the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) with the 7th Division as part of the Divisional Cavalry. The Division played a leading part in the First battle of Ypres in October / November 1914, halting the German drive to the channel ports, at terrible cost to the original Expeditionary Force which had left England only three months before. In March 1915 the Northumberland Hussars were in action again at the battle of Neuve Chapelle, in a successful counter-attack against German infantry. Later in the year, now a corporal, Jameson saw action at Loos, and at the end of the year, after leave at home, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the Royal Field Artillery, 1st Northumbrian Brigade. He trained in gunnery at Edinburgh University and was then posted back to France to 242 Brigade RFA, of 50th Division. His Brigade took part in the battle of the Somme in July / August 1916. The following year in April Jameson's artillery was in action with the Canadian Corps at Vimy Ridge. He was promoted to Lt and received a Mention in Despatches. The Battery was now to receive a change of scene, entraining for Italy, to take part in the operations on the River Piave in the Montello area. Later Lt Jameson was awarded the Military Cross for gallant and meritorious conduct in Italy. The Battery returned to France and took part in the final battles of 1918. Jameson records that he and his men did not learn of the cease-fire until about 4pm on 11th November! Now a Captain, Jameson returned to England in 1919 for demobilisation, and studied at Durham University from 1920-22. Later he became a member of the Chartered Insititute of Secretaries. In 1927 he married Grace McKendrick at Gosforth, and in 1932 joined Shelvoke and Drewery, becoming a Director in 1936. In 1993 Jameson appeared in the BBC programme It Will Be All Over by Christmas, one of five 'Old Contemptibles' who contributed to the feature. As a result of this programme he met Julie Robinson, who became the second Mrs Jameson in March 1995. In July 1996 he returned to France with other veterans to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the battle of the Somme and pay tribute to his fallen comrades. He died in 1999 aged 106.
