*Signature Value : £45

Graduated from Sandhurst and was commissioned into the King's Royal Rifle Corps in 1930, serving in India in Military Intelligence. With an interest in mountaineering from a young age, this gave him an opportunity to climb in the Himalayas. He spent the first years of World War Two as a Commando instructor, then led a battalion of motorised infantry in the Italian campaign, gaining the Distinguished Service Order. He then transferred to Greece until the end of the war. He is best known, however, for leading the successful expedition for the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. After this and the accolades that came with the success, he returned to the Army until retirement in 1956. Important post-retirement roles included : first Director of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, first Chariman of the Parole Board, and author of the Hunt Report which advised on the role of police and military personnel in Northern Ireland. He died on 7th November 1988.
