Clipped Signature - L B Barker.

Served as the engineering officer aboard the submarine HMS Thrasher in the Mediterranean during World War Two.


Clipped Signature - Sir John Hill-Norton.

Born into a naval family - his father was First Sea Lord and Admiral of the Fleet - he attended the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, joining the Royal Navy in 1957. His commands include HMS Antelope, HMS Southampton and HMS Invincible before he took senior positions from 1985 until retiring in 1995.

Clipped Signature - Sir Peter Vanneck.

Served aboard HMS King George V as a Midshipman in the chase to sink the Bismarck. Later joined the Fleet Air Arm and then Royal Air Force Reserve, rising to the rank of Air Commodore. He was also Lord Mayor of London. He died in 1999.

Clipped Signature - Sir Kenneth Cross.

One of only two RAF airmen to survive the sinking of HMS Glorious when his No.46 Sqn Hurricane was aboard, he lated commanded Hurricane squadrons in North Africa before taking senior roles at the Air Ministry. He died in 2003.

Clipped Signature - John Boutwood.

Served as a Midshipman aboard HMS Inflexible in 1917 and by World War Two was in command of HMS Curacoa when it controversially collided with the troopship Queen Mary and was sunk. He went on to command the minesweepers HMS Fly and HMS Fantome, retiring in 1951.

Clipped Signature - Michael Haworth.

Joining the Royal Navy in 1927, he served on HMS Valiant, HMS Warspite, HMS Hawkins, HMS Sardonyx and HMS Danae before World War Two. Qualifying as a naval aviator, he then served on HMS Glorious as an Observer in Swordfish aircraft. In the Battle of Britain, his No.826 Naval Air Squadron was under RAF control and in 1941 he joined HMS Formidable in the Western Mediterranean. He was on HMS Furious in 1942 for the relief of Malta. Post war he had senior positions including command of HMS Aisne and HMS Diamond, retiring in 1965. He died in 1999.

Clipped Signature - Thomas Gould.

Tommy Gould was awarded his Victoria Cross together with another of the crew of HMS Thrasher for crawling through 20ft of casing with an unexploded bomb to dispose of it, at great danger from both the bomb and drowning should the sub have to dive. He died in 2001.


Clipped Signature - D T Andrews.

A Firefly pilot with No.827 Sqn Fleet Air Arm, he served aboard HMS Triumph during the Korean War from 25th June 1950 to 29th September 1950.

A Seafire pilot with No.800 Sqn Fleet Air Arm, he served aboard HMS Triumph from 25th June 1950 to 29th September 1950 during the war in Korea.

Clipped Signature - Ian McIntosh.

A Submariner who survived a merchant ship sinking by crossing the Atlantic to Brazil with a lifeboat of survivors before serving on HMS Thrasher. He then commanded HMS Sceptre, sinking around 15,000 tons of shipping. Later knighted and promoted to Vice Admiral. He died in 2003.

Clipped Signature - D F W Phillips.

Served as the Commanding Officer of 829 Naval Air Squadron flying Barracuda from the aircraft carrier HMS Victorious. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for undaunted courage, skill and determination in carrying out the daring attack on the German battleship Tirpitz on 3rd April 1944.

Clipped Signature - Willibald Volsing.

He was the Senior Controller in the Gunnery Fire Control Section on the Tirpitz, and was on board when the ship was attacked and capsized. Trapped deep inside the ship, he was one of the lucky few to be cut free from the upturned hull by rescuers.


Clipped Signature - Howard Instance.

Joined the Royal Navy as a Boy in 1933, retired as Lieutenant Commander in 1959. Survived the sinking of HMS Royal Oak on 14th October 1939, but was badly burned. Served on HMS Witherington on Atlantic Convoys and HMS Aberdeen on convoys to Freetown. He retired in 1959 and became a schoolteacher, retiring in 1980.

Clipped Signature - Alfred Hutchinson.

Joined the Royal Marines aged 17 to serve in the Great War. He was selected for the assault to blockade Zeebrugge, going aboard the Mersey ferry Iris. With huge loss of life around him, he survived the assault but was wounded and invalided in 1919. He worked in the newsprint industry, retiring in 1976 and lived to more than 100 years of age.

Clipped Signature - Gunter Hielscher.

Serving in the Kriegsmarine since before World War Two, he was on the destroyer Z-8 from January 1938 to March 1940, later becoming Chief Engineering Officer on Prinz Eugen from November 1943 to May 1945.


Clipped Signature - Wilhelm Alsen.

Joined the German Navy and within a year was a gunner on the battleship Scharnhorst. When the battleship was sunk in 1943, just 36 of a crew of almost 2,000 were rescued - Wilhelm Alsen was the 36th. He served the remainder of the war as a prisoner.


Clipped Signature - Karl-August Schuldt.

Joined the Bismarck almost immediately after signing up for the Kriesgmarine in 1941, serving in the engine rooms. Still at his battle station as she sank, he was one of the few survivors to escape from below deck, and was rescued by HMS Dorsetshire. He died in 2007.


Clipped Signature - Sir Henry Leach.

Served in the Royal Navy throughout World War Two and was crewing the forward 14-inch turret of HMS Duke of York when the Scharnhorst was sunk at the Battle of the North Cape. He was later Gunnery Officer on HMS Newcastle and commanded HMS Dunkirk and HMS Albion. He was First Sea Lord during the Falklands Conflict of 1982. He died in 2011.

Clipped Signature - Stanley de Courcy-Ireland.

Graduated as a Midshipman in 1915 joining HMS Bellerophon in 1916 - he was in charge of Q Turret at the Battle of Jutland. Debris from HMS Vanguard landed on his turret when it blew up in July 1917, and he survived the sinking of HMS Pellow in 1918. Remaining with the Navy, he served on HMS Westcott, HMS Venomous, HMAS Cerberus, HMS Frobisher, HMS Furious, HMS Argus, HMS Hermes, HMS Courageous, and HMS Glorious. At the beginning of WW2 he was second in command of HMS Newcastle, then commanded the land station HMS Owl. He later commanded HMS Ajax, retiring from the Navy in 1951. He died in 2001.

Clipped Signature - Maxwell Shean.

Attack crew commander of midget submarine X-24 awarded the DSO for an attack in Bergen, Norway and awarded a Bar to the DSO for an attack with XE-4 where critical Japanese communications cables were cut off Saigon. He died in 2009.
