Desert Victory by Robert Taylor. IAF Squadron Commander Avaham Lanir, flying an Israeli Air Force Mirage III high over the Syrian desert, scores a victory over a Syrian MiG-21 on 9 November 1972. Later, during the Yom Kippur War, his Mirage was hit by a Syrian missile ambush, forcing him to eject over enemy territory. Despite valiant efforts to rescue him, he was captured by the Syrians and died under interrogation. |
One MiG Down by Robert Taylor. A formation of Mirages led by Lt Col Avi Lanir, commander of 101 Squadron Israeli Air Force, intercepts MiG21s over the Syrian Desert on 9th November 1972. In the ensuing dogfight two of the Syrian MiGs are shot down, one of them from a direct hit by Lanir to score his second MiG victory. Created with the direct input of one of the greatest Jet Aces of the Supersonic age, Giora Epstein, this spectacular piece is a tribute to one of the greatest fighter leaders of the Isreali Air Force, Lt Colonel Avraham Lanir and depicts an arena of aviation combat that is seldom featured. |

It was a successful fighter aircraft, being sold to many air forces around the world and remaining in production for over a decade. The Mirage saw action with the Argentinian Air Force during the falklands campaign and also the Isreali Air Forces Mirage aircraft saw combat.
