Merlins over Malta by Gerald Coulson. If the German and Italian forces were to succeed in their campaign in North Africa something had to be done about Malta. British submarines and torpedo carrying aircraft based on the tiny Mediterranean island were wreaking havoc with Axis shipping, severely hampering their efforts to get supplies and reinforcements through. The German High Command had had enough and the order came to obliterate the island. Malta immediately came under continual day and night aerial bombardment from the combined strengths of the Luftwaffe and Italian Regia Aeronautica. So intense was the onslaught that by the end of 1942 Malta had become the most heavily bombed place on earth. Too far away for fighters to fly from Gibraltar, any reinforcements would have to be brought part way by aircraft carrier. Until Churchills order to send the latest Spitfires came in March 1942, the island had to defend itself as best as it could with what remained serviceable of the few obsolescent Hurricanes flown to the island off HMS Argus in 1940, and from Ark Royal and Victorious in 1941. Gerald Coulsons painting Merlins over Malta shows Hurricanes of 126 Squadron, based at the islands Ta Qali airfield, diving to intercept a force of Junkers JU88 bombers as they make an attack on the port at Valletta. In the foreground of this powerful reconstruction is Hurricane Z3055, which is currently undergoing restoration for the Malta Aviation Museum. Guardian Angel by Gerald Coulson. As Britain holds itself ready for perhaps the greatest battle it has ever fought, a pair of Mk 1 Hurricanes of 213 Squadron set out from their base at Biggin Hill for an early morning patrol over the Channel, they could meet the enemy at any moment. As they cross the coast, they are joined in spirit by a 213 Squadron Sopwith Camel from an earlier conflict. With the Battle of Britain poised to begin the great task of defending the nation will fall upon their shoulders. But at least for today the spirit of their guardian angel will be at their side.

Atlantic Convoy by Gerald Coulson. (GS) RAF Coastal Command fought a lonely war charged with defending the English Channel and the North Atlantic convoy routes, hunting U-boats, reconnaissance and rescuing downed airmen. And one aircraft above all others came to symbolise Coastal Command - the Short Sunderland, one of the finest flying boats ever built. Just a few days after the declaration of war Sunderland flying boats were in action, rescuing all 34 crew from the cargo ship Kensington Court sunk by U-32 off the Scillies. It was the beginning of the long and deadly struggle between Coastal Command and the U-boats. Winston Churchill wrote that the only thing that really worried him during the war was the submarine menace. He knew that if the vital North Atlantic lifeline was severed, there could be no ultimate victory. The task facing the Allies was immense, and the Battle of the Atlantic raged for nearly three years before, in May 1943, heavy losses forced Admiral Doenitz to pull his U-boats out of the North Atlantic. That same month five submarines were sunk by Sunderlands. It was the turning point of the Battle of the Atlantic, and for the next year the Allies were able to build up supplies and troops for the D-Day invasion. Gerald Coulson's magnificent painting Atlantic Convoy is a moving tribute to the aircrew of Coastal Command and portrays a typical North Atlantic convoy scene to perfection. The crew of a lone Sunderland, its four mighty radial piston engines thrumming powerfully against the gathering wind, keep a vigilant look out for a distant sighting of a U-boat. Behind them the convoy, laden with vital supplies, ploughs on relentlessly, ever closer to Britain, and safety.

High Speed Intrusion by Gerald Coulson. Famous for the Dambusters raid during the Second World War, RAF 617 Squadron is now based at Lossiemouth in Scotland. With its high-tech Tornados, the squadron today presents a very different picture to that of the 1940s. In 1990 they again found themselves in a combat situation when Iraq invaded Kuwait and their skills flying at high speed - low level were called on once more. This impressive painting by Coulson is a fitting tribute to one of this countrys most famous Squadrons.
