Thermopylae 480BC, Spartan and Thespaian Hoplites. By Chris Collingwood. So Tell The Spartans, Stranger passing by that here, Obedient to their laws, we lie. In 480 BC the Spartans tried to defend the pass at Thermopylae against the Persians led by Xerxes. The Persian fleet had sailed along the coastline from northern Greece into the Gulf of Malia on the eastern Aegean Sea towards the mountains at Thermopylae. The Greek General and King Leonidas led the Greeks and tried to defend the pass of Thermopylae. All the defending Spartans were killed during the Battle of Thermopylae. Their defence and courage provided inspiration to the Greeks, and the following year the Greeks won battles against their old enemy the Persians. |

The Roman Signifer by Ivan Berryman. The Signifer was a standard bearer of the Roman legions. He carried a signum for a cohort or century. Each century had a signifer so there were 59 to 60 in a legion. Within each cohort, the first centurys signifer would be the senior one. |

Maddened by the disaster the kings elephants kept colliding with friends and foes alike, according to Arrian. Soon after the victory, Alexanders men, weary and homesick, demanded that he turn back. |
Leonidas by Ivan Berryman. Leonidas, the Spartan king, etched his name into history through unwavering courage. As the epitome of braverym he stood against the invading Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Leading a small band of Greek allies, Leonidas valiantly defended the narrow passage, where Xerxes' massive army sought to invade Greece. |

Alexander at Arbela, Plain of Gaugamela, Iraq, 331BC by David Pentland. Flanked by his Companion heavy cavalry, Alexander, King of Macedon, led the charge which broke through the left wing of the Persian army, and forced Darius, the Great King, to flee the battlefield. Persian success against his own left wing forced him to delay his pursuit of the routed troops, but by the end of the day the battle was won, and the heart of the Persian empire lay at his feet. |

The Lictors Bring to Brutus the Bodies of his Sons by Jacques Louis David (GL) The full title of this lagre magnificent painting is Brutus Returning Home after Having Sentenced His Sons for Plotting a Tarquinian Restoration and Conspiring against Roman Freedom, the Lictors Bring their Bodies to be Buried. Having led the fight which overthrew the monarchy and established the Roman Republic, Brutus tragically saw his own sons participate in a plot to restore the monarchy. As a judge, he was called upon to render the verdict, and unhesitatingly condemned his own sons to death. |

Julius Caesar by Ivan Berryman. Julius Caesar was a Roman general renowned for his military prowess. He achieved notable victories in the Gallic Wars (58-50 BC), expanding Roman territory to include present-day France and Belgium. Caesars conquest of Gaul culminated in the decisive Battle of Alesia. His subsequent Civil War against Pompey (49-45 BC) saw him triumph in battles like Pharsalus and Munda, ultimately leading to his dictatorship over Rome. His military successes laid the groundwork for the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. |
Nordic Military Men Negotiating with Romans Over Gold, Silver Bowls and Coins by Anton Hoffman Romans engaged in trade with Nordic soldiers primarily during the Roman Empire's expansion into northern Europe. They established trading posts and maintained trade routes across the Roman frontier which facilitated the exchange of goods such as Roman luxury items and metalwork, along with wine for Nordic resources like furs, amber, and precious metals. |
The Battle of Teutoburg Forest, AD 9 by Brian Palmer. In AD 9, three Roman legions - 20,000 men plus camp followers - commanded by Governor Varus crossed the Rhine into what they believed to be friendly territory on their way to putting down a local uprising. A young chieftain of the Cherusci tribe, Arminius, had guaranteed them safe passage through his lands. However, Arminius who held a grudge against the Romans, deliberately deceived Varus and in a four-day running battle in the forest overwhelmed and slaughtered the Romans almost to a man. Varus, along with his surviving senior officers, took their own lives to avoid capture. |
