Last Dogfight of Werner Voss by Ivan Berryman.
The air battle that took place above the trenches of France on the evening of 23rd September 1917 was to go down in history as one of the most extraordinary dogfights ever. The young German ace Werner Voss found himself engaged with no fewer than eleven SE5s of 56 Sqn, among them British aces such as James McCudden and Arthur Rhys Davids. Hugely outnumbered, the brave Voss saw off several British aircraft with his amazing airmanship and accuracy of fire. Again and again he could have fled the scene due to his Triplanes superior rate of climb, but his attacks were insistent and deadly. His final moments came when Rhys Davids found himself on the tail of Voss and fired both his Lewis and Vickers guns into the little turqoise Triplane which was seen to drift toward the ground, his aircraft inverting before impact, killing Voss instantly. The painting shows Voss distinctive pre-production Fokker F. 1, with the yellow nose of Jasta 10, being pursued by the SE5 of Rhys Davids while, high above,a Spad is helping to keep a gaggle of Albatross DVs at bay.

Gotha G. V. by Ivan Berryman.
Bathed in the low winter sun over southern England, Gotha G.V.s are attacked by defending Sopwith Camels as the German bombers penetrate the south-eastern counties en route to London. This was, effectively, the first Battle of Britain, staged during the winter of 1917/18, during which the intruders were frequently repelled, their bomb loads falling harmlessly on English soil.

HMS Emerald and HMS Enterprise by Ivan Berryman.
Of the three E-Class cruisers proposed at the end of World War 1, only two were ever completed, Euphrates being cancelled when the war with Germany ended in 1918. The two sisters, Emerald and Enterprise, enjoyed long and varied careers, the former remaining largely unchanged from her original appearance, the latter being much modified. The two ships are shown together at anchor off Trincomalie between the wars.

To the Green Fields Beyond, Cambrai, France, 20th November 1917 by David Pentland.
At 0620 hours covered by a brief barrage from 1000 guns, Brigadier General Elles in a MkIV called Hilda led his 476 tanks against the impregnable German Hindenburg line at Cambrai. Supported by 6 infantry divisions and 4 Royal Flying Corps squadrons flying ground attack missions, the attack had broken through 3 trench lines and penetrated 5 miles on a 6 mile front by lunchtime. Although these gains were not exploited and later retaken by a German counter offensive, Cambrai showed the full potential of the tank on the battlefield.

The Death of Wittmann, St Aignan de Cramesnil, France, 8th August 1944 by David Pentland.
Following an astonishing night march, the tanks of 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry and men of 1st Battalion Black Watch found themselves ensconced in the village of St. Aignan de Cramesnil some 4 miles behind German lines. Shortly after noon a small group of Tiger I tanks were spotted advancing north by 3 Troop, A Squadron. Some minutes later Captain Boardman arrived in his Sherman I and when the enemy were within 800 yards he gave the order to open fire. The first two shots by the troops Firefly brewed up the rearmost target. After moving to a new position Trooper Joe Ekins fired again, knocking out a second Tiger. Finally he turned his attention to the remaining tank, destroying it with two more rounds. Unknown to the British tankmen at the time it is now believed that the last Tiger was that of the top German tank ace Hauptsturmfurher Michael Wittmann.

The Brave Redoutable by Ivan Berryman.
Already ravaged by incoming shot from the combined French and Spanish fleets as she approached the enemy line, HMS Victory found herself under intense attack from the French 3rd Rate 74-gun Redoutable. The two ships became entangled, grappling irons went across and the most terrible artillery battle commenced. Admiral Lord Nelson was fatally wounded by a shot from the Redoutables mizzen top before it was brought crashing down. Now the British three-decker, the 98-gun Temeraire appeared outboard of the Redoutable and began pouring further shot into her, the little French ship dwarfed by two mighty British vessels. But still she fought on, refusing to strike her colours. Of all the ships at Trafalgar, Redoutable sustained the highest casualties with 478 killed and 81 wounded. Depicted from left to right are HMS Temeraire, Redoutable and HMS Victory.

HMS Pegasus by Ivan Berryman.
The last seaplane carrier built for the Admiralty, HMS Pegasus was launched in 1917 and benefited from all the lessons learned from her predecessors, possessing a flying-off platform forward, served by twin derricks, and a hangar and cranes aft, capable of carrying up to nine aircraft. She is shown here with one of her Short 184s (N9290) about to take off, whilst a similar aircraft is preparing to be lowered into the water in the background.

Known as the Silent Service the men of the United States Submarine Force were the unsung heroes of the US navy. In World War Two, Submarine Force alone was responsible for sinking over fifty percent of Japanese Shipping - but the success came at a high price - one in five submarines did not survive the war. Here USS Wahoo, arguably the most famous US Submarine of the war, is seen surveying a kill during her fifth war patrol in 1943.

After the 2nd Royal North British Dragoons had charged the French artillery, they themselves were charged by the 3rd French Chasseur Chevals and the deadly 4th Regiment of Lancers. The scene depicted shows the French cavalry engaging the Scots Greys.

Into the Valley of Death by Brian Palmer.
After the charge up the valley and taking huge losses, The Light Brigade crashed through the Russian guns at the end of the valley. They were counter- charged by Russian cavalry. Shown here are the 11th and 8th Hussars engaging the Russian Uhlans and Dragoons. The losses to the Light Brigade were very high - 113 killed, and 134 wounded. General Pierre Bosquet after witnessing the charge remarked - It is magnificent but it is not war. The battle of Balaclava, finally ended leaving Balalcava still in British Hands.
